(adults and teens)
Everyone can meditate. Truly. And you will leave this workshop completely ready to begin or resume your practice. I’ve come to believe, after my many years of returning to the cushion, that the KEY to meditation isn’t the right props and books, it’s finding the style of meditation that works for YOU
You hear the research everywhere: Meditation is good for you. Good for de-stressing. Good for brain health. Good for coping with chaos. Good for pain management. Good for slowing your internet-connected brain down. Good for advancing your yoga practice. Good for developing and satiating that longing for interconnectedness with others and the Divine. So you think you’ll try it. But you have to wonder what it really means to meditate? There’s so many styles to choose from. What if you choose the wrong one? What if you do it wrong? And you can’t stand to sit that long, much less “stop thinking”. And when you sit for more than a couple minutes you fall asleep. Honestly, you don’t even know where to begin. You simply don’t get it. Your mind wonders. You peek at the clock 50 times. In the first minute. You end up wondering if you would be more committed and feel more supported if you designed the proper space. So you build your altar. And buy the right props. Maybe you need a mantra. You can’t choose a mantra. So maybe you’ll just keep reading one book after another on meditation. After all, it proves the intention is there when you become scholarly on the topic. Not to mention that eventually something will just click. And enlightenment will be attained. In 3 sittings……. YOU CAN’T MEDITATE!
Everyone can meditate. Truly. And you will leave this workshop completely ready to begin or resume your practice. I’ve come to believe, after my many years of returning to the cushion, that the KEY to meditation isn’t the right props and books, it’s finding the style of meditation that works for you–fitting your personal style, personality, and singing your soul—rather than grasping to some random form because we think it is the ideal. In this workshop, I will provide an overview of the many, many styles of meditation and distill them down to the 4 main ingredients that exist across styles and traditions. From there, we will explore our personalities, preferences, lifestyles, and unique ways of processing information. It’s really that simple: four steps and knowing a little about yourself and you will find your practice. Next, we will experience several styles of meditation to further inform your choice. Finally, before leaving, we will discuss the practicalities of a daily practice and how to support it so that we can “dig our wells deep” by answering the “simple” questions that never seem so simple. Like if it’s okay to scratch your nose.
In this workshop you will:
- Understand the 4 components common to every meditation practice
- Discuss and experience some of the many styles of meditation
- Explore your personality, preferences, lifestyle and unique way of processing information to inform your choice of a style
